An older cottage with thick walls, timber windows and rooms in the roof lit by dormer windows. Old walls like these need to be able to dry out, so the insulation has to manage moisture rather than seal it in.
What we did
On the outside walls we built new timber studwork, filled it with natural fibre insulation and covered it with INTELLO Plus, a vapour control membrane made for this kind of build. Every joint and every window was taped, because the membrane only works if it is continuous. Then the walls were boarded.
Upstairs, the rooms in the roof were boarded on the walls, the sloping ceilings and the dormer cheeks, with the deep window reveals lined to match, before the whole house was skimmed.
The loft above was insulated too, with mineral wool between the joists and boards laid over the top.
